The only question left after picking your tool is: what to learn from. This post collects official documentation, written guides, and video tutorials for six tools—backtesting.py, Freqtrade, lightweight-charts, vectorbt, backtrader, and Jesse—into one place. Every single link was actually opened and verified on 2026-09-08, not one broken. Each section ends with a clear path: from setting up the environment to running your first backtest chart, with an estimated time.
The previous post covered the tool comparison. This is the second half—once you’ve picked your tool, the common bottleneck is “the docs are too long, the videos are too old, and half the third-party tutorials are SEO farms.” I filtered everything down to one verified best resource per tool, 21 links in total.
| Tool | Fastest to First Chart | Best Resource Type |
|---|---|---|
| backtesting.py | 30 min | Official Quick Start |
| Freqtrade | Half a day | Official docs (best of the six) |
| lightweight-charts | 1 hour | Official tutorial (third-party mostly outdated) |
| vectorbt | Half a day | Official homepage + AlgoTrading101 |
| backtrader | Half a day | Video for concepts + Official Quickstart |
| Jesse | Half a day | Videos by the author himself |
backtesting.py — Fastest to First Chart

lightweight-charts — Same Candlestick Engine as TV
This one is a bit special: it’s a charting library, not a backtester. The official tutorials are high quality and sufficient; most third-party tutorials are outdated or broken. Only verified official resources listed here.

backtrader — Old-School Stock-Friendly

Path: Algovibes video for concepts → run through the official Quickstart’s cerebro flow → fill in optimization and plotting with AlgoTrading101. Note: the project hasn’t had a new release in nearly two years, so when you hit issues, search the community rather than the official repo.
Jesse — Full-Stack Crypto Quant
One advantage this tool has over the rest: the video presenters are the author himself (Saleh), so the content never goes stale or drifts from the current version.
Official Documentation
- Jesse — Getting Started — Environment setup, project template, getting it running

Two Things to Keep in Mind
- Video or docs first?: If you’re unfamiliar with backtesting concepts themselves (cerebro, signals, equity curves, etc.), watch your chosen tool’s video first to build intuition. If you already have the concepts down, the official quick-start docs are the fastest route.
- Tutorial recency: vectorbt tutorials are all based on the free core version; the Pro UI is only covered in the invite-only docs on the official site. backtrader tutorials tend to be old but the core concepts haven’t changed. Jesse 3.x and 2.x have significant CLI differences, so follow tutorials from 2024 onward.
